Gentle Care for Anxious Kids

Active kids get hurt — it happens to the best of them. Here are the moments we see most, and how we help families just like yours.

"My child took a hit during practice and knocked out a tooth."

Time matters with a knocked-out tooth. Call us immediately — we will walk you through exactly what to do on the phone while you drive over. We keep same-day emergency slots open specifically for moments like this.

"My kid chipped a tooth at the game and is really embarrassed and hurting."

We get it — a chipped tooth can shake a kid's confidence as much as it hurts. We will get them in today, fix what we can right away, and make sure they leave feeling good about their smile again.

"My child fell during gymnastics / a bike ride and their mouth is swollen and bleeding."

Swelling and bleeding after a fall can look scarier than it is — but it does need to be checked. Our team will assess everything quickly, explain what happened, and take care of your child calmly and gently.

If your child feels anxious about the dentist, you’re not alone.

Many children feel nervous, fearful, or overwhelmed during dental visits. Some are simply too young to sit comfortably through treatment. Others may need more extensive care.

Our goal is simple:

To help your child receive the care they need in the calmest, safest, most comfortable way possible.

We offer three levels of sedation, depending on your child’s needs.

The Two Levels

of Sedation

We’ll recommend the option that keeps your child the most calm, safe, and comfortable based on their age, health, and treatment needs

Level 1

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Best for: Mild nervousness or anxiety

  • Helps your child relax while remaining awake

  • Safe and commonly used for children

  • Wears off quickly after the appointment

  • Your child can return to normal activities the same day

This is often perfect for children who just need a little help feeling calm.

Level 2

General Sedation

  • Recommended for complex treatment or specific medical needs

  • Your child sleeps completely through the procedure

  • Performed in a setting with higher level medical supervision

  • Continuous monitoring by trained medical professionals

  • Used when treatment requires a higher level of medical supervision

This option ensures the safest environment for children who require advanced medical support during treatment.

Our Goal Is Simple

When a dental emergency happens, the last thing a parent should have to worry about is whether they’ll be taken seriously or seen quickly.

At South Gaston Pediatric Dentistry, our goal is to be the calm, dependable answer to your family’s most stressful dental moments — treating your child’s pain promptly, explaining every step clearly, and making sure both child and parent leave feeling relieved, informed, and cared for.

Your child’s safety is always our top priority.

Every sedation option is carefully selected based on your child’s health, age, and treatment needs. We take time to explain everything, answer your questions, and make sure you feel completely comfortable before moving forward.

Our team is specially trained to care for children and ensure a calm, positive experience.

Questions From

Parents Just Like You

We want you prepared and confident, even in stressful moments. Here’s what parents ask us most about pediatric dental emergencies.

My child's tooth was knocked out at practice. What do I do RIGHT NOW?

Do not touch the root. Keep the tooth moist — in milk, saline, or between your child's cheek and gum if they are old enough. Call us immediately at (770) 790-4590. The sooner we see them, the better the outcome. We will guide you on the phone while you drive over.

Can you see my child the same day?

Yes. We hold same-day emergency appointments specifically for situations like this. Call us as early in the day as possible and we will get your child in fast — often within hours.

My child is terrified of the dentist after getting hurt. How do you handle that?

This is one of the most common things we hear. Dr. Williams specializes in anxious and scared kids. We go at their pace, explain every step, and make sure your child feels in control before we do anything. Many of our most nervous kids end up loving their visits

Should we go to the ER or call a pediatric dentist first?

For dental injuries, always call a pediatric dentist first. ERs can manage pain but cannot treat dental trauma. We are equipped to handle sports injuries immediately and can tell you on the phone whether the ER is also necessary.

Can you make a custom mouthguard to prevent this from happening again?

Absolutely — and we strongly recommend it for any child in contact sports. Custom-fitted mouthguards offer far better protection than store-bought ones. Ask us at your child's appointment and we will take care of it.

Sedation Questions Other Moms Ask Us

If you’re feeling nervous, that’s completely normal. These answers can help you feel more prepared before we meet in person.

Is sedation safe for children?

Yes. Sedation is carefully planned and monitored to ensure your child’s safety and comfort.

How do I know which option my child needs?

We evaluate your child and recommend the safest and most appropriate option.

Will my child feel pain?

Sedation is designed to ensure your child remains comfortable throughout treatment.

Can I stay with my child?

In most cases, yes. We want both you and your child to feel as calm and supported as possible, and we’ll let you know exactly what to expect on the day of treatment.

Will my child remember the visit?

With options like oral sedation and general anesthesia, children often remember very little or nothing at all about the procedure, which can help prevent future dental anxiety.
